It Started with Sketchbooks
Drawing has never been something I decided to do. Some people kept journals. I filled sketchbooks.
It's how I've spent my free time for as long as I can remember. So turning that lifelong habit into a career has been one of the luckiest things that's ever happened to me.
The less is more
People often ask why I spend so much time drawing in black and white. The answer isn't nostalgia. It isn't tradition either.
Color is wonderful. It can create mood, depth, and atmosphere in ways nothing else can.
But it can also be forgiving.
Take color away and the drawing has nowhere to hide. A weak composition can't be rescued with dramatic lighting or fancy effects. Balance matters. Composition matters. Every line has a job to do.
I enjoy those limitations. They force me to solve problems instead of avoiding them.
The Basics Still Matter
There's a saying I love: before you can break the rules, you have to know them.
That's how I see drawing.
Once you understand the fundamentals, you earn the freedom to bend the rules.
Until then, the rules exist for a reason.
The Fun Begins Here
Most commissions don't begin with a complete idea.
They begin with a conversation.
Sometimes it's a rough sketch.
Sometimes it's a few reference images.
Sometimes it's nothing more than a memory, a dream or a story that only makes sense to one person.
Those are my favorite projects.
A finished concept leaves little room to explore.
An unfinished one leaves room for discovery.
Ideas Need a Human Touch
Lately, more and more clients have been sending AI-generated sketches along with their ideas.
I never dismiss them. If an image helps explain an idea, it's already useful.
But I rarely treat it as the answer.
More often than not, it's only pointing us in the right direction.
I'll draw the version the client had in mind, then the version I believe tells the story better.
Nine times out of ten, they choose the second one.
Not because I'm trying to prove AI is bad.
Because good composition still wins.
The Sketch Comes First
One of my favorite moments comes halfway through a commission.
The sketch.
When I send it over, many people assume they're looking at a nearly finished illustration.
They're not. They're looking at the blueprint.
This is where we decide if we're telling the story right.
Changing a pencil line takes less time.
Changing a finished illustration can mean starting over.
A few days later, the finished illustration arrives with layers of detail that didn't exist in the sketch.
Watching the finished piece exceed their expectations never gets old.
The biggest reward isn't finishing the artwork.
It's hearing, "This turned out even better than I imagined."
A Story Worth Keeping
Over the years, my illustrations have become tattoos, Ex Libris bookplates, collectible cards, gifts, and deeply personal keepsakes.
The project changes. The reason behind it doesn't.
Someone wants to hold onto a memory, celebrate a milestone, honor a person, or give shape to an idea that's been living in their head for a while.
Giving those stories a place to live is still my favorite part of the job. Aleksandra The Artist
